Avdiivka, to the northwest of Donetsk city, remains the scene of some of the heaviest fighting as Russian forces continue their push from the north into the center of town. Even so, the DeepState mapping site suggests Russian forces are perhaps no more than several hundred meters away from the main supply route into town. Serhii Tsekhotskyi, an officer with the 59th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade, told Ukrainian television that Russia was deploying large numbers of troop into the battle for Avdiivka. Lying just a few kilometers north of Donetsk airport, captured by Russian forces in early 2015 after months of periodically heavy fighting, Avdiivka has been firmly in Moscow’s crosshairs ever since. East of Kupiansk and the Oskil river, along the northernmost stretch of the battle, an army spokesman told Ukrainian television on Saturday that Russian forces were pressing.

CNN —A Russian missile strike killed at least 51 people in a village near the eastern Ukrainian city of Kupiansk on Thursday, officials say, in what would be one of the deadliest attacks against civilians since the conflict began. There’s been little change on the front lines in Ukraine over the past day, according to the Ukrainian military — but plenty of shelling. “Ukrainian defense forces repelled numerous enemy attacks near the town of Mariinka,” it said. The General Staff said the Russians had launched more attacks with S-300 missiles against the town of Kostiantynivka, which lies west of Bakhmut. Geolocated social media video also shows Russian attacks in the Kharkiv region, where the two sides are separated by the river Oskil in some areas. The General Staff said that in Russian-occupied areas, civilians were still being pressured to take Russian citizenship.
Oct 16 (Reuters) - Russia's defence ministry said on Sunday its forces had repelled efforts by Ukrainian troops to advance in the Donetsk, Kherson and Mykolaiv regions, inflicting what it described as significant losses against the enemy. Russia also said it was continuing air strikes on military and energy targets in Ukraine, using long-range precision-guided weapons. Russia denies targeting civilians in what it calls its "special military operation" in Ukraine which it launched on Feb. 24. Russia said its forces had held positions during "fierce fighting" in the Kherson region and also inflicted blows on Ukrainian positions in the Donetsk region. In Ukraine's Kharkiv region, Russia said it destroyed three U.S.-manufactured howitzers and a crossing point on the Oskil River, set up by Ukrainian forces to move reserves and ammunition.
That blast, which was used by the Kremlin as a justification for Monday’s onslaught, bruised the Russian psyche and handed Ukraine a significant strategic boost. And the airborne strikes distract from what has been a dismal stretch for Russia in the ground war. They were “an indication of the nature of the threat from Russia,” Giles said. “The reopening of a northern front would be another new challenge for Ukraine,” Giles said. Beyond weapons supplies, Ukraine will be watching to ensure that Western resolve stays firm if Russia tightens energy supplies even further.
KUPYANSK, Ukraine—The grain elevator towering over the eastern edge of Kupyansk, the former seat of Russian power in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, was supposed to be defended by soldiers from an elite Russian unit. But when troops from Ukraine’s International Legion moved to seize the compound on Thursday, part of the developing Ukrainian military offensive east of the Oskil River, the expected firefight never happened.

Their soldiers are using working T-72 tanks that were abandoned by Russian forces, it said. The equipment is higher quality than the broken weaponry Russian troops left earlier in the war, it said. The move prompted Russian troops to flee as fast as they could, leaving behind so much weaponry and ammunition that Ukraine has struggled to handle it all. The Institute for the Study of War said that Russian forces are "attempting to mobilize additional forces" but have "proven unable to generate significant combat power."
